A small church in southern Scotland contains the mausoleum of medieval Scotland's most powerful noble dynasty. Let's meet them. This is Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Douglas and 2nd Duke of Touraine.
Archibald is lying on his back (my camera angle makes him look sideways) BUT many medieval monuments do feature the effigy lying on their side! Especially ones of couples, there's actually a great one from Inchmahome Priory on the Lake of Menteith that is a beautiful effigy of a couple and it looks like the man is spooning his wife! Will need to share a Substack about that with images as its so beautiful, thanks for reminding me!
Why was his effigy lying on his side, do you know? Usually they are on their back? Excellent story Beth, loving this series.

Thanks so much Gillian, glad that you enjoyed this one! <3
What a moment in history, it reads like a movie script!
